Home to many local university students and young professionals, the neighborhoods of Allston and Brighton form a unique community unlike any other in Boston. Drawing from its eclectic mix of college students, young professionals, and immigrant populations, Allston-Brighton has a vibrant music scene and offers delicious, varied cuisine. Allston has many locally owned music venues including Wonder Bar, Great Scott, and O’Brien’s Pub. Opened in 1977, The Paradise Rock Club headlines national acts, as well as local rock and alternative artists. Brighton Avenue, between Packard’s Corner and Allston Street, boasts cuisine from China, Korea, Japan, Afghanistan, India and Thailand, and traditional American and Italian food. In recent years, Allston-Brighton has become a hotspot for vegetarian foods, such as FoMu, Grasshopper and Peace o’ Pie.
Allston and Brighton are located between Boston University along Commonwealth Avenue, and home to Boston College, a private Jesuit university located near Chestnut Hill, and the Harvard University Business and Medical Schools. Harvard’s recent expansion efforts has attracted larger businesses, such as New Balance, headquartered here, as well as WGBH, a public television station responsible for a large amount of national programming. The Allston-Brighton neighborhood is home to some of the city’s more recent charter and pilot schools, including MATCH, The Boston Leadership Academy, and Another Course to College. The Horace Mann School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, located in Allston, is the oldest public school for the hearing impaired in the United States.
Housing varies and largely consists of brick apartment buildings, especially on Commonwealth Avenue and its side streets. Other areas, particularly near Brighton, are dotted with wooden triple-deckers in the traditional New England styles. Sections of Allston feature mostly 1890-1920s single-family and multi-family Victorian homes.
Each year the community hosts the Allston Village Street Fair on Harvard Avenue between Brighton Avenue and Cambridge Street. The fair features live performances, international food, and local businesses, along with family-friendly activities. The annual Allston-Brighton Parade and Allston DIY Fest feature many of the neighborhood’s musical acts.
